5-door Suzuki Jimny Reimagined in EV Avatar

While the Suzuki Jimny has been around for four generations, it’s been available only with a petrol engine option

Suzuki Jimny has been a classic example of what an affordable, sufficiently fun and highly capable off-roader should be like. It’s been around for four generations, with the latest generation recently receiving a 5-door version for India. Next, the carmaker could be contemplating an all-electric version to tap on the fast-expanding electric car market. While details on this upcoming electric 4×4 are sketchy, here’s an excellent digital illustration that visualises the popular compact off-roader in an EV guise.

An electric version of the Suzuki Jimny makes perfect sense owing to its huge popularity in many parts of the world. In fact, in UK, where it’s sold only in a commercial vehicle variant, electrification could help cut running costs by a pretty good margin. Moreover, it gets important for Suzuki to come up with an electric version before SAIC-GM-Wuling comes up with an electrified clone of the compact 4×4. Suzuki Motor Corporation recently revealed its plans of pumping in USD 35 Billion for the development of as many as 5 electric cars. The first of these will go on sale in Japan later this year, while European market could get it by end-2024. While the last of these would be introduced only by 2030, the electric version of the Jimny could be just about a couple of years away from us.

While the last of these would be introduced only by 2030, the electric version of the Jimny could be just a bit more than a couple of years away from us.  The digital rendering seen here could give us a glimpse of what the e-SUV could look like. In fact, this illustration gives us a pretty good idea of what the EV would look like. The front facade features a shut-off grille along with a new bumper. Even the alloy wheels are different while fuel flap has been replaced with the charging socket. Overall, the electric version looks very cool and could very well be close to the actual model.

While Europe and other Western markets will receive the three-door version, a five-door model for India could follow in an year. There’s no official word on the specs but it could feature a 60 kWh battery. It will power an electric motor on the each axle. It will be interesting to see how the engineers overcome the packaging constraints on the compact ladder on the frame. It might, in fact, imitate the electric Toyota Hilux and use a double-decker structure.
