Merely days after Tesla opened its Supercharger network to non-Tesla EVs via ‘Magic Docks’, Rivian’s navigation system now displays Tesla’s charging network
Earlier this month, Tesla, Inc. opened its Supercharger network in the USA to all EVs. With this, now, even the non-Tesla CCS-capable electric cars and trucks can use select charging hubs in the Tesla network through ‘Magic Docs’. So, now, when a Tesla model goes to the designated charging station, the charger works normally for the Tesla connector. However, when a non-Tesla EV visits the Supercharger, it can unlock the Magic Dock and make it a CCS adapter through settings on the Tesla mobile app.

Currently Only 11 Tesla Supercharger Stations Equipped with Magic Dock
This move could be a game-changer of sort as most experts consider the Supercharger network as the best DC fast-charging family of chargers in the USA. However, it’s worth noting that as of now, only about a dozen stations are equipped with the Magic Dock. Regardless, some electric car manufacturers have already started to take advantage of this. For instance, Rivian, whose EV charging strategy is similar to Tesla, has released a software update that updates the navigation system to show these Supercharger locations.
Supercharger locations with Magic Dock feature can be now selected in the Rivian Navigation app’s charger filters. They are even being displayed in the Rivial mobile app on versions 1.12 or later. However, it is important to note here that Rivian users will need to download the Tesla mobile app to charge at a Supercharger location. The recently rolled out Version 2023.10.00 of Rivian software also offers Plug and Charge feature when using the carmaker’s Adventure Network and Waypoint chargers. This improves the overall user experience by making the entire process seamless. However, this feature is yet to be rolled out at all the locations in the company’s network. Furthmore, the carmaker notes that this feature will be launched “on a rolling basis.”

Rivian’s Adventure Network Currently Available Only at 24 Stations
A press statement issued by Rivian reads: “Your vehicle now shows select Tesla Supercharger locations with a Magic Dock in the Navigation app’s charger filters. A Magic Dock allows you to charge your Rivian at select Tesla Supercharger locations. These locations also show in the Rivian mobile app version 1.12 or later. To charge at a Tesla Supercharger, you need to download the Tesla app.” Akin to Tesla, Rivian has its own charging network. On the other hand, most other carmakers have to rely on third-party charging stations. That said, Rivian has only about two dozen stations as of now. What this means is that with the addition of Tesla Supercharger network, Rivian users now have access to a few more chargers.
