It must be noted that buyers of both Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are entitled to a C$5,000 federal incentive in Canada
In an interesting development, Tesla Inc has listed Made-in-China Model 3 and Model Y units for retail in Canada. With this, it’s pretty much confirmed that the renowned electric car manufacturer has received the first batch of vehicles that have been shipped to North America from the Shanghai plant.

With this, the Model Y RWD and the long-range Model 3 AWD are available for immediate delivery in the British Columbia. The codes of the available vehicles clearly indicate them being from the Giga Shanghai. The two models are currently entitled to a C$5,000 (approx. UDD 3,695) federal incentive in Canada. It should be noted here that unlike the USA, Canada doesn’t offer electric vehicle subsidies based on the location of the facility where the vehicles are built.
Quite understandably, most electric vehicle manufacturers enjoy a cost benefit in China, while the start of the exports to North America has given a boost to Giga Shanghai. The carmaker has plans to export 9,999 units of Model Y from China to North America this quarter. This is the first time the California-based carmaker has exported vehicles from China to North America, thereby establishing a direct connection between its largest factory and the largest market.

37.11% YoY Growth
The Giga Shanghai produces Model 3 and Model Y for the local market along with the export markets. In April, Tesla registered 39,956 deliveries in the Chinese domestic market. The exports stood at 35,886 units in the same tenure (as per data released by the China Passenger Car Association). In the previous calendar year, Tesla Inc made 439,770 deliveries in China. This corresponds to a healthy 37.11% growth from 320,743 units in 2021. Meanwhile, the carmaker’s Shanghai-based facility exported 271,095 vehicles last year. The manufacturing unit churned out 727,000 Tesla vehicles in 2022, which is a whopping 49.7 percent up from 2021.
