DeLorean DMC-12’s Legendary Designer Giorgetto Giugiaro Comments on Tesla Cybertruck
Amidst the widespread criticism faced by Tesla for the aesthetics of the Cybertruck, 85-year-old legendary car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro stands as a unique figure who can empathise. Renowned for designing iconic cars like the Lotus Esprit, BMW M1, and notably the DeLorean DMC-12, Giugiaro holds a perspective shaped by decades of automotive design.
Tesla Cybertruck’s Criticism Similar to That Faced by DeLorean DMC-12
Tesla Cybertruck, akin to the DeLorean DMC-12 featured in Back to the Future, encounters critiques reminiscent of those faced by the iconic sports car in 1981—focusing on angular design and smudge-prone body. In reassurance, Giorgetto Giugiaro conveyed to NPR via email that Tesla shouldn’t be overly concerned.
Ahead of the 2019 event, Musk provided insights into the Cybertruck’s design, citing influences from films like Blade Runner and The Spy Who Loved Me, known for sharply angled fronts and wedge shapes. Giugiaro noted that this style, mastered in the 1970s, resembled a “modern Miami or San Francisco ‘chalet,’ almost a provocation.”
Giorgetto Giugiaro Refrains From Passing Aesthetic Judgement
In 1981, the DeLorean DMC-12, born from the collaboration of John DeLorean and Giugiaro, faced criticisms akin to those now directed at the Cybertruck. Despite a 40-year gap, both vehicles share similar feedback. The DMC-12 gained iconic status, notably through Back to the Future and the intrigue surrounding DeLorean’s story. Giugiaro refrains from passing aesthetic judgment on the Cybertruck, acknowledging its appeal to those seeking a distinctive vehicle. Only time will reveal if the Cybertruck attains a comparable legacy. “I don’t want to judge the Cybertruck as beautiful or ugly. It certainly has its admirers who want a vehicle to stand out,” Giugiaro told NPR.
