The Tesla Cybertruck, with its futuristic design, has been the talk of the town since its highly anticipated reveal. Whether you’re a fan or not, Elon Musk’s low-polygon pickup has undeniably captured the world’s attention. However, one intriguing feature managed to stay under wraps until recently – the mysterious “Wade Mode.” Interestingly, this revelation didn’t come from a high-profile announcement but from an unexpected source: X (formerly Twitter) user Nic Cruz Patane.

Patane shared a captivating photo, unveiling what appeared to be the off-road vehicle settings menu on the Cybertruck’s infotainment screen. Among the various settings like “Off-Road Mode,” “Handling Balance,” and “Stability Assist,” one setting piqued everyone’s curiosity – “Wade Mode.”
The description accompanying this clandestine mode reads: “Raises ride height and pressurizes battery when driving through water.” This revelation left Cybertruck enthusiasts and automotive aficionados alike scratching their heads. Why did Elon Musk keep this feature under wraps during the Cybertruck’s grand presentation?
Can Cybertruck Function Like a Boat?
During the official presentation, there was no mention of the Cybertruck’s ability to pressurize the battery and navigate through deep waters. Elon Musk had previously claimed that the Cybertruck could float and function as a boat, crossing “rivers, lakes & even seas that aren’t too choppy.” However, the lack of details on how the Cybertruck achieves battery pressurization leaves room for speculation.
Comparisons with other electric pickups, such as the Rivian R1T, raise eyebrows. The R1T can wade through three feet of water without any mention of battery pressurization. While the R1T requires its off-road driving mode for deep water traversal by raising the ride height, it doesn’t address the need for battery pressurization. This prompts questions about why the Cybertruck’s battery needs on-demand pressurization when electric vehicle batteries are typically sealed against water.
